Guns N’ Roses - Live in New York 2006 (continued)
Hilfiger had quickly been removed by security staff as Axl told onlookers, “I didn't even know who he was, but he was a complete psycho bitch!” He then took time to fill out a police report. Lenny Kravitz, presumably a friend of Hilfiger's, also left, while Kid Rock stood around looking nonplussed smoking a huge cigar. A couple of days after the fight, Hilfiger's brother Michael H tried to calm things down by claiming the pair didn't recognise each other. Earlier reports had claimed that Hilfiger disliked Axl because he was dating his brother's ex-wife, Diana O'Connor. Not so said Michael, who claimed he was “happy for them.” He added: “I don't think Axl knew it was Tommy and I don't think Tommy knew it was Axl. But by the time they realised it, the fuse was already lit - and you can't put out the fuse on dynamite.”
After the fight, the club closed its doors. Nobody could get in or out. Things had just calmed down when all hell broke loose again as, just after 1.00am, Axl led the band (minus drummer Mantia) onto the tiny stage. Everyone surged forward and several tables were overturned, the floor suddenly awash with spilt beer and champagne.
Axl looked around at the giant-sized TV monitor behind him with the lyrics flashed up on it and jokingly described the scene as the “karaoke version” of Guns N' Roses.
They began with some tunes from 'GN'R Lies'. Axl said they'd learned the songs in just 20 minutes before going on. To which Tommy cried out, “I'm fucking fearless, I'll try anything!”
Axl laughingly dedicated the song 'You're Crazy' to “my good friend Tommy Hilfiger.” They also did a surprisingly moving version of 'November Rain', for which Axl played piano and Finck did an electric guitar solo. Later acoustic solos by Fortus and Bumblefoot were also exceptional. In all they played 'Used To Love Her', 'Mr. Brownstone', 'Welcome To The Jungle', 'You're Crazy', 'Patience', 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door', 'The Blues', 'IRS', 'Sweet Child O' Mine', 'November Rain' and 'Paradise City'. When it was over, Axl introduced Rosario Dawson onto the stage before leading everyone into a rousing rendition of 'Happy Birthday'. Afterwards, Dawson grabbed the mike and began shouting. “They've never played all acoustic; this is history in the making! How much does this man fucking rock!”
Afterwards, the party continued for Axl and entourage, who moved on to Stereo where they enjoyed a set by cult underground turntable-spinner A.M., featuring a brief spot from Kid Rock, who rapped over a special remix of The Who's 'Eminence Front'. Axl finally left the club at 8.00 a.m. Eye-witnesses say that he was actually smiling…
